I know, I know…it’s not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of South Carolina, but in Columbia, we do have a professional ice hockey team. They are called the Columbia Inferno and have a Dalmatian as a mascot. He’s been known to go skating from time to time. How do I know? I donned the Blaze costume a few years back and actually attempted to skate with it on. I think the most unnerving part was looking into a mirror and not seeing my own face looking back at me, but instead an oversized dog head.

But hockey isn’t all about cute skating mascots. It’s about rough and tumble scoring machine hockey players, right? Well, the Inferno is an ECHL (East Coast Hockey League) affiliate and is entering their seventh season here. The team is affiliated with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL and the Toronto Marlies of the AHL.

You really have the best of both worlds here - today it is currently around 60 degrees. We should reach a high of 78 and the local hockey team kicks off the season with their home opener tonight. No snow shoveling, scraping ice off your car’s windshield or mittens required. Oh, and did I mention that the tickets are affordable? The most expensive seats in the house will run you $19. Life is definitely good in South Carolina!
