Where most of the country calls winter weather for Columbia, South Carolina a heat wave by their standards, we’re having what WE call a cold snap. I found myself on New Year’s Day purging all the excess “stuff” we moved into our new place two and a half years ago. This “stuff” happened to be boxes of unknown items that were the last to be packed at the old house. You know, the “I’ll deal with it later” method of packing.

In a home, very few things are maintenance free. While it is a bitter pill for most homeowners in the Midlands to swallow, the fact is that preventative maintenance, with all the time and money it consumes, is still far more cost effective than the crisis management approach of waiting until something breaks and then scrambling to have it repaired. Preventative maintenance can avoid repairs, extend the life expectancy of many components and in some cases, reduce energy consumption.
